What a comeback!

On the 26th of September, the ladies took to the field once more against Vänersborg, this time fighting for 5th and 6th place in the tournament. After our previous encounter ended in a painful 90–19 loss, this game showed just how far this team has come.

From the first whistle, Uppsala came out strong, both in attack and defence. The first half was a real battle, with 0–0 at half time, Uppsala holding their ground and putting together some beautiful team plays. The second half continued with the forwards putting in the hard work up front and a series of relentless pick-and-goes slowly grinding down the Vänersborg defence before the ball was sent wide to our speedy back line. With big tackles and clean rugby, the players stepped into different positions throughout the game, and everyone seemed ready to do whatever was needed for the team. The forwards continued to provide the platform, while the backs made the most of the space when it opened up.

Eventually, the hard work paid off, with Berit and Fanny (twice!) finding their way over the line, and Isolde converting every kick she was given.

By the final whistle, the scoreboard read 21–12 to Uppsala. What a difference from our previous game against Vänersborg, and what a way to finish the season. This game truly reflects the progress made by the team: the defensive organisation, the attacking confidence, the willingness to cover for each other and, above all, the incredible effort everyone has put in.

A huge thank you goes to those who made an extra effort to be there for this game: Karmen Konnapere travelled from Estonia to join us, Zofia Laine came over from Hammarby, and Anna Thorsell and Angela Woolley once again came out of retirement to put in a serious shift on the field.

Uppsala finishes 6th overall, but rankings aside, there could hardly have been a better way to close the season. From where we started to where we finished, the progress has been massive, and this game was a perfect demonstration of it.

Signed: Ana/Jacques, for my last game as an Uppsala player. It is difficult to put into words what this team has meant, but I could not have asked for a better game to finish on. Leaving the field after a performance like this, surrounded by teammates who fought for every metre. Love you all!
