Dear members and supporters of Uppsala Rugby Football Club,
The spring season is over and the autumn season is about to start, so it is a good time for a club update!
During the spring season all our teams played and the results were up and down. On the positive note was that:
-
Our ladies managed to recruit and play all the games, but because they didn’t go to the play-offs, the season was cut short, but it looks good for the future if the new players keep developing and the recruiting continues.
-
Our men’s team had a lot of younger players and fielded several of our former junior players. Hopefully the development and recruitment will show successful for 2016.
-
Our b-team managed to play all the games, with only Uppsala players, without any help from our friends in Sandviken (who are of course welcome to play with us during the autumn). Not only so, the team never started more than 3 players from the first XV. Over all the quality and scores were better than expected and we look forward to the rest of the season.
-
In our youth section we had new teams in U8 and U14 and both teams started to play matches with good quality and results.
-
URFC’s U10 and U12 continues to develop and the results are showing that these teams are on the right track.
-
Three players have represented Sweden during the first half of the season. From the men’s team Stewart Devine and Luke Perrin was selected for one of the games during the spring and Emelie Hellgren has been a regular in the women’s 7’s national team.
On top of the positive sign on the field, several great things have happened off the field as well. A lot of new equipment has been brought in to facilitate for our players and several sponsors have supported the club. Furthermore, we have had three jobs where the players from the senior teams have helped out and made good contributions to the club economy. In May and June we managed to have 24 rugby lessons in schools and reach out to around 600 kids. In addition, we have also had a Rugby Summer School where 23 kids participated (6 from Enköping!) and from what the kids said we need to organize one again next year.
So, what happens this autumn?
Most of the autumn concerns our 50 years anniversary. Already on Saturday (1st of August) our men’s and ladies teams will play in the international 10’s tournament in Stockholm. We will also field an Old-boys team consisting of 34 player in the ages of 35 to 69 years.
Saturday the 15th of August a club day will be organized and all our teams will play games (see separate news below). There will be food, drinks, candy and rugby related items for sell at Fyrisfjädern all day long. So make sure to book that date. More information about this will be coming closer to the date, but this is the preliminary schedule:
10:00 Uppsala U8 vs to be announced
10:30 Uppsala U10 vs Stockholm Exiles
11:00 Uppsala U12 Stockholm Exiles
11:45 Uppsala U14 to be announced
13:00 Uppsala dam vs Uppsala Old-Ladies
15:00 Uppsala herr vs Göteborgs RK (seriematch)
17:00 Uppsala Old-Boys vs Select OBs
In September 52 persons from the club will go to England to watch France play against Italy in the Rugby World Cup and we hope this will be an unforgettable trip.
Saturday the 17th of October we will have the big 50 years anniversary banquette and everyone with a relation to the club is welcome to come. There will be food, drinks, speeches, singing and dancing, but most of all great company from former, present and past members. If you are interested just send a message to fest@uppsalarugby.se and get the details.
Sports wise the men’s team will play the rest of the matches in the Swedish league and so will the b-team. The ladies team will have to rely on friendly matches. On the youth side our U8-U14 teams will play four rounds in Mälardalsserien and of course the Swedish Youth Championships in Enköping the 26th and 27th of September.
We are also planning to reach out to kids in schools and show them rugby as we have done during the spring season. Hopefully we can get help from our members to do this.
Big thanks to each and every one who has put time and effort into Uppsala RFC so far during 2015 and we hope that we will become more members, players, parents, and supporters and that the results will be better and that everyone will enjoy their time around the club even more during the rest of 2015.
Henrik Viberg, for the committee of URFC.
