Träningsmatch i södra Sverige

Ladies from both clubs spent an hour training together to make the most of the weekend. Split in forwards and backs they could finally practice with opposing scrums or a full back line, despite having a squad of only 9 people available. That extra hour was worth a lot!
Even though it was a training game, designed to give lots of opportunities for feedback, trial and error, and even though coach Olsson emphasised that it was just training and the first game of the season (for several people their first game ever!), I think everyone felt a slight tingle of game nerves. We were lucky to get a couple of extra players, and could play 11 against 11 during the 4x10 minutes we’d set out to do.
The first quarter saw much unstructured attacking from Uppsala, but some better defense. Captain Bergvall flattened Pingvin’s biggest prop in a spectacular tackle that made the Uppsala men’s team cheer in the stands, but we couldn’t stop them from finally scoring the first try of the game, breaking our line straight through the middle. Before the first 10 minutes were up, Uppsala managed to score a try of their own when Sara Sundler sidestepped their back line and put the ball down close to the posts. Conversion was scored by Josefin Devine and Uppsala were back on track!
In the second quarter, one of their kick-offs ended up in the hands of Åsa Wengström. Not bothered at all about being just 15 minutes into her first game ever, she zigzagged past all Pingvin’s defenders and sprinted over half the pitch to score 5 points. Multiple cheers! Conversion scored by Sara Sundler, and it was a good day to be a Pleb indeed.
As the clock ticked on, Uppsala managed to start talking more to each other to structure themselves, and also managed to stabilise the scrums a bit after being constantly wheeled round to start with. Uppsala’s bonus player Kerstin scored two tries during the game, and Emelie Hellgren scored one of the conversions for two extra points. Unfortunately Pingvin managed to run both through and round our outside on a number of occasions, and when the time was up they had scored 5 tries to our 4. Not too bothered about the loss, Uppsala ladies still gained valuable experience and were happy with their unofficial start of the season, despite the 26-31 loss. Also very grateful to have had both Kerstin and Pomme fight in white and blue for the day!
